Where meaning shifts: The “Keepers” Series

The “Keepers” series explores magical realism through subtle shifts within a recognizable image, where meaning remains open and emerges in the encounter between viewer and work.

The Keepers series explores symbolism within magical realism painting, where figures remain recognizable while meaning shifts within the image.

Within the “Keepers” series (Leonoor Ruigrok – 2024), a recognizable world is established, yet never fully settles into place. The figures appear present, grounded even, but at the same time slightly displaced. As if something within the image has shifted.

This shift is not dramatic. It remains contained within the surface of the painting. A gesture, a posture, or the way a figure occupies space introduces a second layer, one that does not fully explain itself.

Between presence and absence

The figures in the “Keepers” series often stand in a state of suspension. They are neither fully part of their surroundings, nor entirely separate from them. There is a sense of holding, of guarding, but without a clear narrative.

This ambiguity is essential. The image does not resolve itself. Instead, it creates a space where interpretation begins.

Rather than illustrating a story, the work maintains a tension between what is visible and what is sensed.

Colour, Surface and Control

The paintings are built with a strong sense of control. Colour is used deliberately, often intensified, yet held within a contained structure. The surface remains relatively smooth, allowing the image to retain clarity.

At the same time, this clarity is not absolute. Subtle shifts in tone, layering, and edges create a sense of instability. The image appears stable at first glance, but begins to open upon closer viewing.

Each element contributes to this balance:

  • the figure remains recognizable
  • the space is present, yet undefined
  • the surface holds, but does not fully close

Symbolism without fixing meaning

Symbolism in the “Keepers” series does not function as a fixed system. The figures do not stand for one clear idea. Instead, they operate as carriers of multiple readings.

Themes of transformation, protection and inner change are present, but never fully resolved. The work does not provide answers. It holds a state of transition.

This approach keeps the image open. Meaning is not delivered, but formed in the encounter between viewer and work.

Magical Realism within the image

Within this series, magical realism does not appear as fantasy or spectacle. It remains embedded within the image itself.

Reality is not replaced. A figure, a body, a presence remains. Yet something within that reality no longer behaves as expected. The image holds, but does not fully stabilize.

This is where the work aligns with magical realism:
not in adding the extraordinary, but in allowing the ordinary to shift from within.

A contemporary position

The “Keepers” series reflects a contemporary approach to magical realism, one that moves between structure and openness.

It does not rely on detailed illusion alone, nor does it dissolve into abstraction. Instead, it maintains a precise tension:

  • between control and release
  • between surface and depth
  • between presence and absence

This tension is what allows the work to hold.

Beyond the image

The strength of the “Keepers” series lies not in what it shows, but in what it leaves unresolved.

The viewer is not guided toward a single interpretation. Instead, the work creates a pause. A moment in which perception becomes active.

In that space, the image continues to unfold.
